Been following Destin's Smarter Every Day series on trying to make a grill scrubber 100% in America. The second video is longer than you'd expect for something about a scrubber, but it's worth sticking with.
Short version, he needed a little plastic knob and a threaded metal insert to hold the head on the handle. The knobs he thought were from Mississippi turned out to be from Costa Rica, so that had to get redone. The inserts were worse, the American supplier first said they had them in stock, then admitted those were overseas too, then said it would take months to tool up a domestic version. Meanwhile he's sitting on a pile of backorders.
So he tries making the inserts himself. CNC lathe in the garage, buddy Rob programming it. It works… but the cycle time is over two minutes a part and they come out pretty rough. Not even close to scale.
The part that got me is when he ends up at Titans of CNC in Texas. A guy named Tyson (who'd only had the machine programmed for a day or two) gets a Swiss screw machine spitting these things out in about 40 seconds each. Watching that whole process, someone sitting down and telling a machine exactly how to cut, drill, tap, and deburr in the right order, that really is the whole ballgame.
Later Destin mentions that a tool and die guy who'd worked on the first video passed away between filming and release, and a bunch of that knowledge went with him. That felt like the real bottleneck. Not robots, not AI. Just whether anyone still knows how to program the thing that makes the tool the robot uses.
If I was starting out today, CNC programming is exactly where I'd point myself. Hands on, technical, and somebody still has to tell the machine what to do.
